THE OTHER WOMAN #70 WITH CHEERBLEEDERZ

Jumpstarting the Jubilee joy with back-to-back queens as I return for my June slot of the Other Woman joined in the studio by 1/3 of London lot Cheerbleederz, Phoebe Cross. I caught up with the drummer of the Alcopop-signed trio ahead of the band’s debut record release this summer to hear all about forming on the London live circuit, wry songwriting and their upcoming live dates across the UK.

And, of course, there’s a blossoming playlist with freshly picked tracks from ace Aussie punks Stand Atlantic, Lyon loves Johnnie Carwash and the mighty return of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

THE OTHER WOMAN #69 WITH fraulein

As is customary come May, I ushered in some Great Escape ready sounds from London twocome Fraulein as Joni of the band joined me in the Soho studios ahead of the band’s performance at the festival later this month. We spoke about the band’s fortuitous formation at an open mic night together, the burgeoning music scene in her homeland of Northern Ireland and the undisputed power of PJ Harvey.

Plus, in a seamless turn of events, the whole playlist is pretty much Fraulein approached with appearances from fellow TGE performers Momma, Brighton based Muff and longtime pals English Teacher.

THE OTHER WOMAN #68 WITH THE NIGHTINGALES’ FLISS KITSON

There was no foolin’ around with this month’s show as I welcomed my best woman and beating heart of The Nightingales’ Fliss Kitson in for a gas ahead of the band’s mammoth UK tour this month. The percussive powerhouse opened up about her decade stint performing with the group, bandleader Robert Lloyd’s entwined journey to fame with an 18ft guerilla statue and why they really, really loved CCTV.

And we keep the rhythms rallying with spins from Long Beach secret, Wargirl, Daisy The Grat (clue’s in the name) and South African majesty Moonchild Sanelly.

And, alongside the band’s playlist picks, some stonecold classics from Xenia Rubinos and Georgia greats Pylon. Plus, welcome returns from art bunch Bas Jan, Nordic pop paragons The Magnettes and fellow feline enthusiasts, The Linda Lindas.

New year, same excellent Soho Radio show! For January, Welsh cult icons Helen Love were coaxed onto the airwaves to share more on hang times with Joey Ramone, glitter cannons and their upcoming new record This Is My World, set for release via awesome sorts I Love Alcopop.

To continue the sparkling odyssey of a hopeful 2022, there were also sunshine sounds from Seattle trio La Luz, back to back with Scala pals this March, Los Bitchos alongside bop-inducing brilliance from Melissa Laveaux, The Bug Club and BODEGA.

THE OTHER WOMAN #64 WITH LAURA MARY CARTER

To round off my string of Other Woman shows for 2021, the enviably cool Laura Mary Carter came into the Soho Radio studios. The guitarist, famed as one-half of indie rockers Blood Red Shoes, performed some stripped-back live tracks from her debut mini-album, A Town Called Nothing which is inspired by just that - a teeny tiny town in Arizona (population: 0) pieced together between various studios and sublets in the UK and Los Angeles.

In between the guitar-based gushing, there’s also a jam-packed playlist with some fave acts of the year (looking at you, Orla Gartland), newcomers Fraulein and welcome returns from Peaness and Camp Cope.

THE OTHER WOMAN #63 WITH ALICE HUBBLE

Sounding the live session klaxon again this month to welcome synth maven Alice Hubble into the studio to perform some tracks - and test my rudimentary German - from her latest record, Hexantanplatz (that’s Witches Dancefloor to you!)

Alice talks through the surge of fellow electro queens like Jane Weaver and we gush over the significance of Lisa Rovner’s Sisters with Transistors. And, of course, there are nods to those customary loud guitars, don’t fret, with new numbers from Courtney Barnett, Sunflower Bean, and the majestic Pillow Queens.

THE OTHER WOMAN #62 WITH ANNIE GARDINER

What better way to mark my return to the actual Soho Radio studios and the start of spooky season than being joined on air by multi-hyphenate and multi-talented Annie Gardiner who packed up her trusty 3/4 nylon string guitar to perform a live session on this month’s show, debuting some of her most introspective work to date. To honour Annie’s celestial summoning and skeleton tales, there’s a magical playlist to boot with spins from LA Witch’s split 7” with The Coathangers alongside sugary pop treats from Self Esteem and Cherry Glazerr 🍭

the other woman #51 with dream nails

When I first had feminist punk troupe, Dream Nails on The Other Woman, we were squatting on speakers and amplifiers in a Harry Potter-sized broom cupboard. So it was thrilling to have guitarist and mega babe, Anya on the line to celebrate the release of the group’s hotly anticpated debut and explain how you really can squeeze a live experience into a Royal Mail approved parcel.

Plus, I even manage to squeeze in fresh-faced jams from West London lot Babeheaven, LA-based rapper CHIKA and Copenhagen trio, girlcrush.

the other woman #50 with daisy beau

In these wild and wooly times, unbelievably grateful for my internet connection, USB interfaces and “live” sessions from The Other Woman. Musician Katie Von Schleicher dusted off the tape recorder to perform some intimate versions of her upcoming album tracks from Brooklyn based home.

Plus, I’ll be busting out my best home-based moves to a playlist packed with long-standing loves Alice Bag and Nadine Shah alongside new numbers from Ganser and Freya Beer.

the other woman #44 with peggy sue

It’s a new month which means it’s a new Other Woman in the hot-seat. Spoiler: it’s me. Thrilled to welcome longtime favourites, Peggy Sue live into the studio, brushing off their vintage guitar to sing out some acoustic renditions of the new record and opening up about the transition from Choir of Echoes’ voices to 2020’s Vices.
